WeeGolden Gopher centerfielder Sam Steidl earned national praise for his accomplishments in 2001. He was listed as one of 13 rookies to make Baseball Weekly's Freshman All-American Team. He is the second baseball Golden Gopher to earn nation-wide honors this spring. Junior Jack Hannahan, the Big Ten Player of the Year, was named an All-American by Collegiate Baseball.

A redshirt freshman from Alexandria, Minn., Steidl led Minnesota in batting average nearly the entire stretch, finishing the season with a .401 mark, and flirted with the top spot in the Big Ten. He was also among the leaders in the conference with a .488 on base percentage, aiding the Golden Gophers to a Big Ten Conference Tournament title. Steidl had the longest hit streak in the Big Ten this season at 22 games. In those 22 games, Steidl batted .476 (30-63) with 18 RBI and 19 runs scored, including three three-hit performances and six other multi-hit contests.
