5/9/2001 12:00:00 AM | Men's Golf
Minnesota is one of 27 teams in the Central Regional competing for 10 spots in the NCAA Championships. The Golden Gophers finished in fifth place at last year's regional tournament and advanced to their third consecutive NCAA Championships.
The field for the Central Regional is highlighted by defending NCAA Champion Oklahoma State, fifth-ranked Texas, 11th-ranked Augusta State, WAC Champion TCU and Big Ten Champion Northwestern. A total of 15 of the 27 squads in the tournament are ranked in the top 50 in the nation in the latest MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings.
Two other regionals also will take place on May 17-19 to determine NCAA Championships participants - the East at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club Williamsburg, Va., and the West at the Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, Ore.
"Overall, we feel good about the balance in each region," said Bob Livingstone, NCAA Golf Committee chairman and men's coach at Long Beach State. `We did have to move some teams around, but we feel comfortable that we have a good balance in each region."
The participants for the Central Regional are listed below. East and West Regional selections can be found at www.ncaa.org.
