SMOLINSKI EARNS PAIR OF MEDALS AT WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES

UniUniversity of Minnesota swimmer Todd Smolinski took second place in the 100-meter backstroke and third in the 50-meter backstroke during the World University Games in Beijing, China. Smolinski, a junior from St. John, Ind., clocked a 55.94 in the 100 meters and 25.99 in the 50.

Former Golden Gopher track athlete Tom Gerding competed in the 400- meter preliminaries, but failed to make the finals. Gerding will be running on the 4x400 meter relay for the USA.
