University Park, Pa.- The University of Minnesota women's soccer team suffered its first Big Ten loss of the season, being shut out, 4-0, by No. 8 ranked Penn State, in University Park, Pa. The Gophers' record falls to 2-4-0 overall and 1-1-0 in Big Ten play.
Penn State (4-2-0, 1-0-0) outshot the Gophers, 15-1, and held a corner kick advantage of 8-1. For the second match in a row, the Gophers were limited to just one shot.
Penn State All-American Christie Welsch scored the first of her two goals at the 14-minute, 13 second mark of the match. The Nittany Lions entered the second half with a 2-0 lead.
"There was definitely some miscommunication," said Minnesota head coach Barbara Wickstrand of her team's lack of offensive opportunities. "We had a hard time offensively in transition. They are a strong team and we need more work on our offense."
Minnesota will come home to the friendly confines of the Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium to continue Big Ten play next Friday against Illinois.
