GOPHERS DOWN THE FIGHTING ILLINI, 2-0
9/28/2001 12:00:00 AM | Athletics
Rachael Roth (Wayzata, Minn./Wayzata) put the Gophers on the board with less than nine minutes left in the first half. Her opening goal came off an assist from senior defender Samantha Meyers.
Roth was credited with a second goal off an Illinois defender in the second half just after the 73-minute mark.
"They played really solid," said Minnesota head coach Barbara Wickstrand of the Gophers defense. "Our goal is two wins this weekend. We are half way there, but we have to take it one game at a time."
Illinois took the loss despite leading the Gophers in shots, 26-6. Minnesota's Julie Eibensteiner (North Oaks, Minn./Totino-Grace) held the advantage in saves over the Fighting Illini, 11-1.
Minnesota returns to action of Sunday, Sept. 30, against the University of Iowa Hawkeye's, at 1 p.m.
