VASILJEVA LEADS MAROON TO VICTORY IN ANNUAL INTRASQUAD MEET

Golden Gopher sophomore Darja Vasiljeva led a 1-2-5 Maroon finish in a 25-30 victory at the University of Minnesota's annual women's cross country intrasquad meet Saturday at the Les Bolstad Cross Country Course.
Vasiljeva, last year's Big Ten Frosh of the Year, covered the 5,000- meter course in 18 minutes, 33 seconds. She was followed by teammates frosh Lisa Dyer, who came in second at 18:34 and senior Crystal Glenn in fifth at 19:17.
"There were definitely some surprises," says Gopher head coach Gary Wilson. "This was a tremendous race with the youth of the team placing in the top 10. If we mature we will be alright this season."
Sophomore Laura Bjork led the Gold by placing third in 18:50. Frosh teammate Zoe Nagell was fourth, 19:03, while sophomore Krista Anderson placed sixth, 19:18.
Minnesota begins the 2001 season next Friday, Sept. 14, when it hosts the Memorial "Oz" Run, which gets underway at 5 p.m.
