MINNESOTA MEN'S GYMNASTICS FALLS TO ILLINOIS

The Fighting Illini won or tied in all of the events. Minnesota was led by Alvarez's 53.050 all-around performance which included first-place finishes in the floor exercise (9.400) and parallel bars (8.850). Alvarez, a native of Denver, Colo., also took fourth on the pommel horse (8.750), 10th on the rings (8.550) and vault (9.000), and fifth on the high bar (8.500).
The Golden Gophers also were led by three-time All-American Clay Strother who finished second in the all-around with a score of 51.350. The Jasper, Texas native placed third on both the floor (8.650) and vault (9.200). The meet also saw 2001 Big Ten Freshman of the Year Eric Steele's first action of the season. Steele won the vault with a 9.350.
Minnesota, 0-2 in the Big Ten, hosts second-ranked Iowa at 8 p.m. at Williams Arena Saturday, Feb. 2, in Minnesota's first home meet of the season.
