MARSHALL TRANSFER ASSENTS TO MINNESOTA SOCCER

tranThe University of Minnesota soccer head coach Barbara Wickstrand announced on Wednesday that Amanda McMahon (Stillwater, Minn./ Stillwater Area) has committed to play for the Gophers. McMahon, a transfer from Marshall University will join the Gophers for her junior year.

"We are excited about Amanda coming back to the state of Minnesota," said coach Barbara Wickstrand. "We recruited her two years ago and we think she will be a great fit for our team. She's a hard worker that sees the field really well."

McMahon has won numerous accolades during her two years at Marshall. The Stillwater, Minn., native was twice named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Great Lakes Regional Second Team. She earned the 2000 Mid-American Conference Newcomer of the Year award and first team All-Mid-American Conference honors twice.

McMahon led Marshall in goals in 2001 with eight. McMahon also tallied a conference-leading 12 assists on the season. She led Marshall women's soccer to its best season ever. The team posted an 11-7-1 overall record and finished 5th in the MAC.

As a first-year athlete, McMahon set school records in points (32) and goals (14). She also led the MAC in points per game with 1.88.

In high school McMahon was honored as Minnesota's "Miss Soccer" and Minnesota's Gatorade Player of Year. She led Stillwater to state titles in 1998 and 1999.

McMahon will play for the Gophers at center and midfield positions during the 2002 season.
