Soccer Drops 2-1 Decision at Northwestern

In a battle between the bottom two teams in the Big Ten, the University of Minnesota women's soccer team fell 2-1 to Northwestern today in Evanston, Ill., to drop to 1-6-0 in the conference and 6-7-1 overall. The Golden Gophers' lone win in the Big Ten came against then-No. 14 Michigan in a 4-0 rout. Minnesota now closes out the conference season with four home matches in the next two weeks.

The Maroon and Gold put the first point on the board against the Wildcats on freshman midfielder A nnie Carr's second goal as a Golden Gopher. Carr took the assist from freshman Hilary Stowell on a free kick to beat NU goalkeeper Anne Helm in the seventh minute and put Minnesota up 1-0. Stowell picked up her team-leading third assist of the season on the play.

The Golden Gophers gave up two first-half goals, however, to lose their first match when scoring first. The Wildcats tied the game in the 39th minute on Ashleigh Garmon's goal after a cross from the left side by Molly Makfield. Northwestern tallied the game-winnier at 41:22 as Aileen Guiney beat Minnesota goalkeeper M arni Prall, using an assist from Tabitha Lowey. With the win, Northwestern moved to 4-7-2 overall and 2-5-1 in the Big Ten.

Prall picked up the loss in her second career start at Minnesota. Northwestern edged the Golden Gophers in shots, 12-11, and tallied 23 fouls to Minnesota's 13

Minnesota hosts 13th-ranked Penn State on Friday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m., and Ohio State on Sunday, Oct. 20, at 1 p.m., at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium in St. Paul, Minn.
