No. 8 Minnesota Volleyball Defeats Indiana in Four Games

GopThe eighth-ranked Minnesota volleyball team (22-3, 9-1) defeated Indiana (15-7, 5-5) in four games by scores of 30-19, 24-30, 30-18, 30-27 on Saturday, Oct. 26 at University Gymnasium. The Golden Gophers are now 12-0 away from the Sports Pavilion on the season.

Minnesota took game one 30-19 to go up 1-0 in the match. The Golden Gophers were up 7-6 and went on a 6-1 run to open up the lead to13-7. Minnesota had a 24-19 lead, and closed out the game with the last six points. Trisha Bratford (Reseda, Calif.) and Jessica Byrnes (Minnetonka, Minn.) paced the Golden Gophers with six kills each.

Indiana evened the match at 1-1 by winning game two 30-24. With the score tied at five, the Hoosiers ran off five of the next six points to go up 10-6. Indiana held on to that cushion for the rest of the game, as it outhit Minnesota .379 to .300 to win the game.

The Golden Gophers went up 2-1 by winning game three 30-18. Minnesota jumped out to a 21-8 lead and never led by less then 10 points for the rest of the game. Byrnes led the way with six kills in the match. The Golden Gophers hit .295 and held the Hoosiers to .000 hitting percentage for the game.

In game four Minnesota fell behind 24-18, but scored 12 of the 15 points to secure the game and match. The Golden Gophers trailed 27- 24, but ripped off the last six points of the game. With the score tied at 27, Minnesota got a block assist from Byrnes and Cassie Busse to go up 28-27. Bratford and then Busse followed with back-to-back kills to finish the match.

Byrnes led the way hitting .519 (17-1-27) with a career-high 17 kills and six blocks. Bratford also had 17 kills and six blocks on the night. Busse had 13 kills, eight digs, four blocks and three service aces. Sophomore setter Lindsey Vander Well (Prinsburg, Minn.) had 52 assists, eight digs and tied a career-high with three service aces. Paula Gentil (Forteleaza Ceara’, Brazil) had 23 digs.

Minnesota outhit Indiana .278 to .184. The Golden Gophers also outblocked the Hoosiers 16 to 8 on the night.

Indiana was led by Katie Pollom who had 15 kills. Christina Archibald and Melissa Brewer had 14 kills each.

Minnesota will complete a four-match road swing when it travels to Illinois on Friday, Nov. 1 and Purdue on Saturday, Nov. 2.
