Gopher Rowing Completes Fall Season at Head of the Iowa

The winning Gopher Open 4+ shell finished the race with a time of 15:09:62. In the winning boat was novice coxswain Catie Hill, followed by rowers Amber Riopel, Melissa Roche, Jackie Gagner and Angela Hedin. Minnesota's Boat "B" initially won the race, but was excluded from competition because of a penalty. Minnesota had two additional boats in the Open 4+ race, finishing in the top 10 spots out of 33 entries. Minnesota had times of 15:38:04 and 15:46:74, coming in at the eighth and ninth spots. Leah Gross coxswained a boat consisting of Sarah Underdahl, Jessi Johnson, Kirsten Kosloske and Lora Sweezy. The other Open 4+ boat was Erica Gordon at coxswain, followed by Mariel Gartner, Sam Wangsgard, Lida Storch and Beth Ratterman.
The third-place Varsity Eight boat finished the race with a time of 13:31:47, finishing 5:38 behind the winning Iowa boat. The Gophers' shell consisted of Nelson at coxswain, Beth Hornby at bow, Roche, Jill Peters in seat six, Heidi Rose, Hedin, Wangsgard, Kosloske and Gagner. Minnesota's other Varsity Eight boat of Hill, Underdahl, Riopel, Alison Zylstra, Ratterman, Gartner, Johnson, Sweezy and Storch came in eighth out of 22 entries.
The novice team competed in the Novice Eight competition with Minnesota finishing third and 11th in 36 entries. The Gophers' third-place boat had Kristi Branigan at coxswain, followed by rowers Shelby Williams, Natalie Olvera, Sarah Reed at seat six, Janette Gustafson, Katie Engel, Jillian Casey, Colleen Brown and Jenna Buskohl.
"We finished closer to other Big Ten teams this weekend then we did at the Head of the Charles last weekend," Gopher coach Wendy Davis. "We are in a good spot at this point going into winter training season and look forward to competing again in the spring."
The Gophers' next competition will be in the spring season, starting in March. Minnesota will travel to Oak Ridge, Tenn. to compete in a dual against Louisville, March 16.
