20University of Minnesota men's swimming head coach Dennis Dale announced that Andrew VanMeter from Ames, Iowa, has signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the Gopher men's swim team for the 2003-04 season.

VanMeter won the high school state championship the last three years in the both the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke at the Iowa state high school championships and holds the state record in each event. VanMeter, a multiple high school All-American, is also a senior qualifier in both the 100 fly and 100 back events. He was named the NISCA Swimmer of the Year his freshman, sophomore and junior seasons. For the past two years, VanMeter was the recipient of the Iowa High School Swim Coaches Association's Athlete of the Year award.

"We're excited to have Andrew join our team," Dale said. "It was a very tough recruiting battle for us and we're glad that it paid off. Andrew continues a great tradition of fly and backstrokers here at the University of Minnesota. In addition, Andrew's versatility should help the free relays."

The Gophers take a week off to prepare for the Minnesota Invite, Nov. 22-24. The Gophers will be home for the second straight meet when Minnesota hosts the U.S. Open, Dec. 5-7. Both events will be held at the University Aquatics Center.
