The second-ranked University of Minnesota women's hockey team swept two ranked opponents this weekend, including a 4-3 win over No. 3 Harvard today at Ridder Arena.

Minnesota (11-0-1, 7-0-1 WCHA) started the game with a short-handed goal at 2:58 in the first period. Kelly Stephens notched her second career short- handed tally with the assist going to Krissy Wendell. The Golden Gophers' lead would not last long as Harvard scored two goals by the end of the period at 14:52 and again at 18:49. Minnesota was outshot, 13-3 in the first period.

The Gophers would tie the game at 2:04 in the second period with a goal from Wendell. Kristy Oonincx was credited with the assist. Minnesota then added an additional goal in the second to put the team up, 3-2. Allie Sanchez scored her third goal of the season at 15:36. Noelle Sutton picked up the loose puck and passed it off to Winny Brodt. After receiving the pass, Brodt took a slap shot, where Sanchez took advantage of the rebound.

Harvard tied the game at 14:37 of the third period on a goal from Angela Ruggiero, but Minnesota scored 1:03 later to win the game. Natalie Darwitz scored a goal at 15:40 with the assist going to Sanchez.

Harvard pulled its goalie, Jessica Ruddock with 1:16 left on the clock for the extra attacker. However, Minnesota's defense did not allow a shot on goal with the extra person. By the end of the game, Harvard had outshot Minnesota, 35-16. Jody Horak had 32 saves and improved her record to 10-0-0.

"What a great win and great weekend for us," Gopher coach Laura Halldorson said. "I was very proud of our players for the effort, character and heart they showed against two very good teams."

The Gophers take their first road trip since October, when the team takes on No. 5 St. Lawrence next weekend. Both games are set for 7 p.m. (EST).
