2003-04University of Minnesota men's swimming head coach Dennis Dale announced that Zach Wood from Alma, Mich., has signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the Gopher men's swim team for the 2003-04 season.

Wood will add depth to the Gopher squad in the freestyle competitions. He won the Michigan state championship in both the 200 and 500 freestyle as a junior last season to lead his high school team, Alma, to a state championship in 2002.

"We're very fortunate to have a versatile and talented freestyler like Zach join our team," Dale said. "We feel like we're developing one of the top distance programs around, and Zach will be instrumental in the progress and direction that this group takes."

The Gophers host the Minnesota Invite, Nov. 22-24, one of the largest events the Maroon and Gold will host this season. Among the eighth- ranked Gophers, Iowa, No. 14 Wisconsin, Missouri, Florida Atlantic and Air Force will be there representing Division I competition. The Gophers will be home for the second straight meet when Minnesota hosts the U.S. Open, Dec. 5-7. Both events will be held at the University Aquatics Center.
