The first night of the Minnesota Invitational started off with a bang at the Aquatic Center today. A tremendous ceremony featuring a diving exhibition began the finals tonight. The night concluded in spectacular fashion in the 400-yard medley relay. The team of Todd Smolinski, Jeff Hackler, Matt Taylor, and Terry Silkaitis won the event in a time of 3:16.70. This is a B Standard time and has provisionally qualified the team for the NCAA Championships.

"I'm real happy with today. It was a good first day that will carry us through the next two, " Coach Dennis Dale commented. "One of our goals was to win all of the relays, and we're still on track for that after today. Our swimmers in the 500 free and the IM events were particularly outstanding."

The Minnesota Invitational will continue tomorrow at the Aquatic Center with prelims beginning at noon and finals starting at 6:00 p.m.
