Gopher Men Swimmers Take Commanding Lead at Minnesota Invite

lThe eighth ranked Gopher men's swimming and diving squad added to their lead at the Minnesota Invitational tonight at the Aquatic Center. After two days of events the Gophers are out to a commanding lead with 708.50 points. 14th-ranked Wisconsin is in second with 551 points, followed by Iowa and Missouri.

Minnesota continued to dominate the relay events by setting meet records in the 200-yard medley relay as well as the 800-yard freestyle relay. The team of Todd Smolinski</ a>, Jeff Hackler, Bjorn Lundin, and Allen Ong came in with a time of 1:29.23. The time is a season best, as well as a B standard time , which provisionally qualifies the relay for the NCAA Championships. In a thrilling race to conclude tonight's action, the 800-yard freestyle relay team of Justin Mortimer</ a>, Sean McCaffrey, Terry Silkaitis, and Matt Taylor placed first in the event in a meet record time of 6:35.56. This time is also a B standard time as well as a season best.

In the 400-yard individual medley, Justin Mortimer</ a> and Ryan Plummer placed third and fourth respectively. Mortimer came in with a season best time of 3:55.68, while Plummer swam a 3:58.61.

Allen Ong placed fourth in the 100-yard butterfly. Ong's time of 49.93 is a season best. Ong was followed by Travis Stensby</ a> and Bjoern Lundin, who placed seventh and eighth respectively.

The top three spots in the 200-yard freestyle were dominated by the maroon and gold. Terry Silkaitis placed first with a time of 1:37,70. He was followed in second by Matt Taylor who swam a season best 1:39.21, and in third by Sean McCaffrey</ a> who came in with another season best time of 1:39.41.

All-American Jeff Hackler won the 100-yard breaststroke in usual fashion with a time of 55.71. Freshman Mike Brown placed ninth in the event.

Another All-American, in Todd Smolinski, set a meet record time in route to winning the 100-yard backstroke. Smolinski's time of 48.47 is a season best, as well as a B standard time. Adam Mitchell placed seventh with a time of 51.43, which is a season best.

In diving, senior Ben Herdt placed fifth in a tough field in the meter diving competition. Herdt recorded a score of 302.95.

The Minnesota Invitational will conclude tomorrow at the Aquatic Center with prelims beginning at 10 a.m. and finals beginning at 3 p.m.
