Martin Named WCHA Offensive Player of the Week

Defenseman Paul Martin, who produced four scoring points to help defending NCAA champion University of Minnesota to a home-ice sweep over Michigan Tech last weekend, has been named WCHA Offensive Player of the Week for Nov.25.

A 6-2,185-pound junior from Elk River,Minn., and the top scoring Division I defenseman in 2002-03, Martin had two assists in a 4-2 Golden Gopher victory over the Huskies last Friday night and then factored in both goals last Saturday evening in a 2-1 win. Trailing 1-0 in the third period on Saturday, Martin scored a game-tying power-play goal at 9:08 and then assisted on Dan Welch's game-winner at 9:38 to lift Minnesota to the sweep.

Martin who has five goals, 14 assists and 19 points in 13 games to lead all Div. 1 defensemen with a 1.46 points per game average, was All-WCHA Second Team a year ago and was a 2nd round draft choice of New Jersey in 2000.

Minnesota, 7-3-3 overall, hosts Michigan State on Nov. 29 and Michigan on Dec.1 in the College Hockey Showcase.
