The Minnesota baseball team has signed Cole DeVries John Gaub, Sean Kommerstad and Josh Oslin to national letters of intent for the early signing period according to an announcement made by Minnesota head coach John Anderson on Monday, Nov. 25. All four players will be eligible to compete for the Golden Gophers in the 2004 season. Each of the four recruits from this year's early signing period came from within the boundaries of the state of Minnesota.

DeVries is a 6-1, 192 pound right-handed pitcher from Eden Praire High School. He was named All-Lake Conference in his junior season. DeVries also received honors for being the top pitcher on his high school team. In his junior season he was 4-3 with a 2.18 ERA, one save and 35 strikeouts in 36 and a third innings. DeVries has a very strong fastball and an outstanding curveball. His high school coach, Mike Halloran was a catcher for the Minnesota Golden Gophers baseball team from 1984-87.

Gaub is a 6-2, 195 pound left-handed pitcher from South St. Paul High School. He was named to the All-Conference team in the Classic Suburban League in his junior season. Gaub was also voted as the top pitcher on his high school team. In his junior season, he was 6-1 with a 2.00 ERA and 62 strikeouts in 42 innings. Gaub is very talented and has been clocked from 90 to 92 mph. He is a very strong lefty that has the tools to be a potential draft pick out of high school.

Kommerstad is a 6-2, 185 pound outfielder from Minnetonka, Minn. He currently is in his senior year at Minnetonka High School. Kommerstad was the second-leading hitter on the Excelsior team that finished second in the Legion World Series this past summer. He was the only non-senior position player to be named to the Star Tribune All-Metro Team (Second Team) in 2002. Kommerstad was tabbed the top high school prospect in Minnesota and the 178th best high school prospect in the nation by Baseball America and Perfect Game Scouting Services. Last season he hit .493 with seven home runs.

Oslin is a 6-4, 180 pound right-handed pitcher from Mora High School in Mora, Minn. He is the University of Minnesota's first baseball recruit from Mora High School. Oslin is a great athlete who has a strong fastball, loose arm and a very strong upside. In his sophomore and junior seasons he was named to the All-Rum River Conference Team and the team's pitching MVP. Oslin was also named All-Subsection for 4AAA in his sophomore season and All-Subsection for 7AAA in his junior season.

"Our emphasis in recruiting this fall was pitching," said Anderson. "I think this year's senior class in Minnesota is a very strong pitching class. We tried to focus on getting players to fill our needs. We are very happy with the two right-handed pitchers, one left-hand pitcher and the talented outfielder we are bringing into our program. We feel these players are all very good matches for our baseball program. All of them have a very high upside in terms of their potential, and we expect them to become a significant part of our program over the next few years."
