Junior Tro y Riddle scored at the 2:30 mark in overtime to give No. 7 Minnesota a 2-1 win over No. 6 Boston College in the championship game of the Dodge Holiday Classic. Golden Gopher goaltender Tra vis Weber was named tournament MVP as Minnesota won its tournament for the fourth straight year.
Both teams battled all night as neither seemed to gain an advantage. Following a scoreless first period, sophomore Jak e Fleming fed a trailing Joe y Martin and his wrister beat BC goaltender Matt Kaltiainen low to give Minnesota a 1-0 lead with less than two minutes to play in the second period. For Martin, it was just the second goal of his career.
The lead held until Boston College went on the power-play midway through the third period. Chris Collins got control of the puck in traffic and beat Weber to knot the game at 11:24 in the third.
The tie would hold and the teams retreated to the locker room to prepare for the 20-minute overtime session (NCAA rules allow teams to play until there is a winner in a championship game of a regular season tournament).
In the Boston College zone, Mat t Koalska won the draw by kicking the puck back to Chr is Harrington. Harrington fired the puck towards Kaltiainen and Riddle was there to deflect it through for the win.
Weber stopped 29 of 30 shots as he earned all-tournament honors for the second straight season. Kaltiainen stopped 39 of 41 shots in the contest.
