Six Minnesota Wrestlers Advance to Quarterfinals of Las Vegas Invitational

The Maroon and Gold currently stands in a tie for fourth place with Colby at 36.5 points. West Virginia holds the top spot with 44 points, followed by Ohio State (40.5) and Michigan (39.5). Illinois (33), Purdue (32.5) and Arizona State (32) round out the top eight.
At 125 pounds, Lowe, seeded eighth, advanced to face top-seeded Chris Fleeger of Purdue. Lowe moved his record to 3-1 this season with a 19- 7 major decision over Damon Rowe of North Idaho and an 11-7 win over No. 9 Seth Lisa of West Virginia. Top-seeded 133-pounder Lewis has cruised through his bracket, posting a major decision and a fall to move on to battle No. 8 Erkin Tadzhimetov of Colby. Lewis pinned David Rodiguez of Cal Fullerton for his third fall of the year.
Lawrence, the top seed at 149 pounds, is pinning his way through the competition. Still undefeated at 5-0, Lawrence pinned Nate Peterson of the Colorado School of Mines in 2:18 and Frank Gill of Brown in 2:08 for his team-leading third and fourth falls of the season. He takes on No. 8 Dan Jankowski of Purdue in the quarterfinals. The bracket features six of the nation's top 10 ranked 149 pounders, including No. 2 Jesse Jantzen of Harvard and No. 3 Eric Larkin of Arizona State.
Top-seeded 157-pounder Becker has dominated as well with two major decision triumphs to move his undefeated streak to 24 matches. He faces No. 9 Matt Lebe of West Virginia tonight. Volkmann, seeded second at 165 pounds, has also posted two major decision wins to improve to 5-0 this season. He battles No. 7 Nick Frost of Arizona State in the quarterfinals. McLay, seeded 11th at 174 pounds, rounds out the UM quarterfinal qualifiers. He pulled off two close decision wins to move on to face No. 2 Alibek Pardakulov of Colby.
