OpenIn their final tune-up before the Big Ten Championships that take place February 23-24 at the University Fieldhouse, the men's track and field team won eight of the sixteen events at the Snowshoe Open. The Gophers were dominant in the middle-distance events taking the first three places in the 400, the first six in the 600 and the first two in the 800 meters.

Sophomore Mitch Potter, last years runner-up in the 400 meters at the Big Ten meet took first at that distance with a time of 48.25. He was followed by a pair of returning All-Americans in sophomore Mikael Jakobsson (48.39) and junior Andy Wohlin (49.47).

Minnesota also swept the 600 and 800 meters. Returning All-American Toby Henkels won the 600 with a time of 1:20.26 followed by senior Bob Quade (1:20.59) and sophomore Adam Steele (1:20.63). Sophomores Neil Hanson and Martin Robeck took first and second in the 800 with times of 1:52.68 and 1:53.31 respectively. Freshman Josh DoBell recorded a victory as well winning the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:31.76.

In the field events the Gophers turned in some exceptional performances. For the third time this season sophomore Lynden Reder broke the school record in the weight throw. His toss of 63 feet 9 inches was good enough for first place and was a NCAA provisional qualifying mark.

Freshman Kevin Netzer continued his impressive rookie campaign as he won the high jump bettering his personal best set last week with a clearance of 7-1. That height also ties the NCAA provisional qualifying mark. In the shot put freshman Karl Erickson took first place with a throw of 56-1 3/4. Erickson earned the NCAA provisional standard last week at the Cyclone Classic.

To close the meet the team of Vince Donahoe, Zach Edmonson, Andrew McKessock and Ryan Ford won the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:20.78.

Two fieldhouse records were also broken. Renwood Wells, running for Heartland Select tied the record in the 60 meters with a time of 6.71 seconds and broke the record in the 200 meters with a time of 21.34 seconds.

The Gophers are next in action Feb. 23-24 when the host the Big Ten Indoor Championships at the University Fieldhouse. The first event is set to start at 10 a.m. Minnesota will be one of the favorites to win the title.
