No. 1 Minnesota Wrestlers Crush No. 16 Wisconsin 40-4

vThe top-ranked University of Minnesota wrestling team crushed No. 16 Wisconsin 40-4 Friday night at Williams Arena in front of 1,804 fans, winning nine of ten matches. The Golden Gophers claimed two victories by fall, two by forfeit and two by major decision.

The meet began with the featured match of the night - the 133-pound bout between top-ranked Ryan Lewis of Minnesota and No. 4 Kevin Black. Lewis proved why he is ranked No. 1 in the country, pinning Black in 2:04 to remain undefeated at 23-0. It was Lewis? seventh pin of the season. Wisconsin won its only match of the meet in the next bout as No. 17 Grant Hoerr downed Trent Hatlevig by a 12-3 major decision at 141 pounds. Hatlevig was wrestling for starter Chad Erikson.

The Golden Gophers won the final eight matches to stay unbeaten at 17-0 (6-0 Big Ten). Third-ranked Jared Lawrence won by forfeit at 149 pounds, followed by No. 3 Luke Becker's win by fall over Chris Borchardt in 1:34. It was Becker's team-leading 10th pin of the season. Nate Baker then made the score 21-4 with his 8-4 win over UW's Ryan Lewis. Lewis took down Baker early in the first period, but scored eight of the next 10 points to improve to 24-10 on the season.

At 174 pounds, No. 8 Jacob Volkmann moved his record to 21-6, defeating Brady Reinke 7-4. Volkmann ended with over two minutes of advantage time. Fourth-ranked Damion Hahn tacked on three more team points at 184 pounds, downing No. 13 Ralph DeNisco 7-4. Hahn, 23-7 overall, has won 10 of his last 11 matches. The Golden Gophers picked up six more points at 197 pounds as Owen Elzen won by forfeit.

At heavyweight, fifth-ranked Garrett Lowney dropped Justin Staebler with a 7-3 decision. Lowney led throughout the match and didn?t allow a Wisconsin point until the third period. Lowney moves to 21-4 overall and 5-1 in the Big Ten. Third-ranked Leroy Vega closed out the meet with a 10-1 victory over No. 14 Tony Black at 125 pounds. Vega built up an 8-0 lead before allowing a Black takedown midway through the third period. With the win, Vega improves to 26-2 overall and 16-1 in duals.

The Golden Gophers host 13th-ranked Illinois Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Williams Arena.
