McCarville picked up her third foul just a minute and a half into the second half, yet scored 11 second-half points, and eight consecutively at one point to keep the Gophers close. Indiana went on an 11-2 spurt to take control, with two Heather Cassady free throws giving Indiana a 56-44 lead with 6:24 to play.
Minnesota closed to within 60-53 on a jumper by Kadidja Andersson with 3:04 remaining, but a Jill Chapman lay-in and a huge three-pointer by Erin McGinnis, halted the comeback. The Gophers were forced to foul late, as Indiana scored their final eight points from the free throw line.
"We just weren?t clicking on offense today," said Minnesota head coach Brenda Oldfiield. "But give credit to the Indiana defense, they played inspired basketball today. When you hold a team that was scoring over 80 points a game to 63, your defense did a great job."
"Foul trouble hurt us," added Oldfield. "Janel was tentative in both the first and second half because of that foul trouble."
Indiana hit two early buckets to take a 5-2 lead before Minnesota went on an 11-0 run to take a 13-5 lead five minutes into the game. McCarville scored six points during the run. The Hoosiers clawed back into the game behind Chapman, who scored 11 points in the first half, including six consecutive points en route to Indiana taking its biggest lead at 29-23 with 2:46 left in the half. The Gophers scored the final five points before the half, on a lay-in by Andersson and a three-pointer by Lindsay Lieser, to pull Minnesota to within a point at halftime, 29-28.
Coming off a career-high 41 points Thursday against Purdue, Lindsay Whalen added 16 points and five assists before fouling out with 1:30 left on the clock. Lindsay scored 12, while Andersson finished with 10 for the Gophers.
Chapman led Indiana with a double-double, scoring 19 points and pulling down 11 rebounds.
Minnesota's next action is Thursday, when the Gophers play host to No. 25 Wisconsin.
