Gopher Women Fall to Ninth at Big Ten Championships

The University of Minnesota women's swimming and diving team fell to ninth place with 111 points after the second day of competition at the 2002 Big Ten Championships. Penn State is in first with 261 points
Junior Dana Baum, the only swimmer to qualify for finals in the swimming events on the second day, placed fifth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:50.23. The freestyle standout also swam the first leg of the eighth place 200-yard freestyle relay (1:34.05) and the last leg of the eighth place 400-yard medley relay (3:44.93). Both relay times were season best times for the Gophers.
Newcomer Abbie Bowden placed 14th in the one-meter diving competition with 235.75 points.
The Gophers continue Big Ten action tomorrow, Feb. 22 at Ann Arbor, Mich. in day three of the championships. Start time is 10 a.m. with the 400-yard IM.
