The Crimson Tide scored four first-inning runs to take an early lead. Senior center fielder Scott McClanahan led off the game with his first triple of the season, down the left field line. Junior Travis Garner and senior Brent Boyd each followed with singles into the outfield, and junior Beau Hearod's double down the left field line gave the Tide a 2-0 advantage. Senior Jeremy Brown's sacrifice fly to left and junior Carlos Sosa's double into left-center made the score 4-0. Alabama knocked seven hits in its first eight at bats, jumping ahead of Tennessee early.
The Volunteers put runners on second and third in the bottom of the first, but failed to bring in a run. Tennessee left-hander Jeffery Terrell settled down after his first inning trouble, facing just 14 batters over the next four innings.
Alabama added to its lead in the sixth on a sacrifice fly, then pulled ahead even further in the seventh on Boyd's two run home run over the left-center field wall. It was Boyd's first of the season.
Two more runs in the eighth inning made the score 9-0, in favor of the Tide.
Cormier did not allow a Tennessee runner past first base after the first inning, and did not surrender a walk, improving to 2-1 on the season. Terrell lasted seven and two-thirds, allowing eight earned runs and striking out four. It was Terrell's first loss of the season.
