Big Ten Men's Gymnastics Championships Wrap-Up

leOhio State's Raj Bhavsar continued his dominance at the Big Ten's Men's Gymnastics Championships this evening during the individual event finals. Bhavsar, who won the all-around title yesterday and led the Buckeyes to the team title, claimed the floor exercise title and tied for the pommel horse crown with Michigan's Jamie Hertz. Bhavsar was named the 2002 Big Ten Gymnast of the Year and Ohio State's head coach, Miles Avery, was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year for the second straight year. Minnesota's Guillermo Alvarez became the second straight Golden Gopher to be named the conference Freshman of the Year.

On the floor exercise, Bhavsar posted a 9.4875 to win the individual title, edging Minnesota's Guillermo Alvarez and Penn State's Kevin Donohue, who scored 9.400 to tie for second place.

On pommel horse, Bhavsar tied for the Big Ten title with Michigan's Jamie Hertz for the title with scores of 9.400. Illinois' Ryan Schwartzkopf was third at 9.225.

In the vaulting competition, Minnesota's Eric Steele won for the individual title for the second straight year, scoring a 9.425. Donohue took second place again for Penn State, scoring a 9.4125, followed by Minnesota's Clay Strother with a 9.300. On the rings, Penn State's Kevin Tan claimed his first Big Ten individual title, scoring a 9.600, edging Michigan's Conan Parzuchowski (9.550). Bhavsar had another excellent routine, finishing third with a score of 9.525.

Donohue continued an excellent Championships, winning the horizontal bar with a score of 9.4375. The next closest competitor was Strother for Minnesota, scoring a 9.100 to finish second.

Donohue also won the parallel bars competition with a score of 9.125 while his teammate, Tan, placed second at 9.0375.
