Three Golden Gophers Receive Big Ten Accolades

postsea Three University of Minnesota men's basketball players were recognized today by the Big Ten Conference for postseason awards. Freshman forward Rick Rickert (right) was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year by both the coaches and the conference media. Rickert was also named to the All-Big Ten second team on both ballots. Rickert is the first Golden Gopher to be named Big Ten Freshman of the Year after leading all freshmen in scoring (14.1 ppg), field goal percentage (.511) and blocks (1.30).

Senior Travarus Bennett (below) was named Co-Defensive Player of the Year along with Indiana's Dane Fife. Bennett led the conference in steals, averaging 2.22 per game. Bennett was also an honorable mention pick by the coaches. Bennett is the first Golden Gopher to be named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. Dusty Rychart earned third-team All-Big Ten honors from both the coaches and media. The fifth-year senior will finish his career in Gold Country ranked in the top 20 in scoring and the top 10 in rebounding in school history.

The Golden Gophers open Big Ten Tournament play on Thursday at 6 p.m. central time against Penn State. The game can be seen locally on KSTC- Ch. 45. If Minnesota wins Thursday, it will face Illinois at 8 p.m. central time on Friday. That game can also be seen on KSTC-Ch. 45.
