Golden Gopher Wrestling Heads To Big Ten Championships

firsMinnesota begins its defense of its 2001 Big Ten and NCAA team titles this weekend in Champaign, Ill., at the 2002 Big Ten Championships. The defending conference champs are looking to become the first Golden Gopher wrestling team to repeat as conference champs since the 1912 and 1913 teams won consecutive Western Conference crowns.

Minnesota won the title last season with two individual champions and 154 points, 23.5 points better than second-place Illinois. After the Big Tens, the Maroon and Gold will be aiming to become the first back- to - b a ck national champions in school history since the 1940 and 1941 Minnesota football teams won consecutive national titles.

The conference tournament will be held in three sessions over the two-day period. The first session starts at noon on Saturday, March 9, and will include competition through the quarterfinals and round one of the consolation bracket. Session two will start at 7 p.m. later that day and consist of the championship semifinals and matches up to the consolation semifinals. Session three starts at noon on Sunday, March 10, and will showcase the championship matches. Also slated for session three are matches for third-,fifth- and seventh-place, as well as the consolation semifinals and championship rounds.
