"Leaving Minnesota is one of the most difficult decisions of my career," said Oldfield, the 2002 Associated Press Coach of the Year. "Everything is in place for this program to be very successful for years to come. I will forever be indebted to the University of Minnesota and Chris Voelz for giving me such a tremendous opportunity, to the fans and the community for embracing this team without hesitation and to the players and their families for their support, hard work and dedication. The chance to coach at the University of Maryland is an opportunity that I truly believe comes around only once in a career, it is a special fit. I hope all the great players in the state will continue to support the University of Minnesota and carry on the success that this year's team worked so hard to achieve."
"Personally, I thank Brenda for bringing to life the potential we all knew rested in this team, program and community," said Chris Voelz, Minnesota Women's Athletics Director. "We have every intention of keeping this going, and have every reason to believe we will with the student-athletes we have back, the great recruits coming in, the prep talent in the state of Minnesota and a wonderful fan base."
The search for a new coach will begin immediately.
