Gophers Fall to Northwestern in Big Ten Softball Tilt

The Gophers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out, Anne Thul singled to right field to plate Jordanne Nygren. The Gophers threatened for more, but had a runner thrown out at the plate and grounded into an inning ending double play to squelch the rally.
Northwestern tied the game as Rane Gunderson led off the sixth inning with a solo home run to left-center field. It was jus the second hit allowed by Gopher starting pitcher Piper Marten.
The Wildcats exploded for three runs in the top of the 10th off Gopher reliever Angie Recknor (13-7). Lauren Schwendimann earned the victory pitching a complete-game, allowing just one run on 10 hits. Marten threw 8 1/3 innings, while giving up one run on three hits.
Nygren and Veronica Roberts both went 3-for-4 at the plate for Minnesota. Nygren also had her team-leading 14th double of the season.
Minnesota will wrap up its series with Northwestern Saturday at noon, followed by a noon doubleheader with Iowa on Sunday.
