HawkeyMinnesota lost to Iowa Friday night by the score of 5-3. It was the first time the Golden Gophers had lost a game since April 19th of this season, and the first time they had lost a game to the Hawkeyes since May of 1996. The Maroon and Gold entered the game with a stretch of 23 consecutive victories over Iowa, and needing just one more to give Head Coach John Anderson his record-setting 755th career victory. It did not happen.

Brad Carlson put Iowa on top right away in the first inning with his 11th home run of the season. The two-out, solo shot to right-center scored just one run, but it gave the Hawkeyes the little spark they needed.

Minnesota tied the game up in the bottom of the second inning on junior Ben Pattee's double down the right field line, scoring senior Jason Kennedy. Kennedy, who reached on an infield single to short, scored his team-leading 54th run of the season, making the score 1-1.

Iowa scored from third on a wild pitch to go up 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning, but Minnesota responded in the home half on junior David Roach's RBI double into the right-center field gap. The two-bagger scored Pattee, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.

Again, Iowa tallied another go-ahead run, this time in the fifth on a passed ball, charged to senior Jeremy Beaulieu; but Minnesota found a way to answer. Junior Luke Appert reached base on a hard-hit ball into right-center field, then moved up to second with his eighth stolen base of the year. Junior Scott Welch delivered a hard shot over second baseman Chris Groth's glove, scoring Appert and tying the game at 3-3.

The Hawkeye's added another run in the sixth and one in the seventh to go up 5-3, and that is how the scoring would end.

Minnesota had its chances, loading the bases three times in the game, and stranding 13 overall; but the Golden Gophers could not get a bounce. Iowa found a way to drop the ball into places the Minnesota defense was not, while the Maroon and Gold hit right into the Hawkeye fielders. Such is the story of baseball.

Sophomore Craig Molldrem struggled in his second straight appearance for the Golden Gophers, allowing four earned runs, but struck out six batters. Iowa starter Reed Pawelk walked six, but found a way to keep Minnesota from scoring, surrendering just two earned.

Freshman Luke Beresford relieved Molldrem in the seventh inning, and completed the game. He allowed just one hit in two and one-thirds innings, striking out four. Dyson Miguel finished for Iowa, fanning one in the ninth for his fourth save of the season.

Minnesota ended its season-high 11-game win streak, and snapped its series-long 23-game dominance over Iowa. Anderson, who continues to play for win number 755, will have to try again on Saturday. The Golden Gophers (26-21, 14-7) and Hawkeyes (22-22, 11-13) will begin their double-header at 1 p.m. CDT, moved up from its original scheduled time of 4 p.m. due to the weather forecast.
