Leopold Named MVP of Golden Gopher Men's Hockey Team

MinSenior All-American Jordan Leopold was named the John Mariucci Most Valuable Player at the Golden Gopher Hockey Banquet Sunday afternoon in Oakdale, Minn. The banquet, sponsored by the Gopher Blueline Club, was held to honor the 2002 NCAA Champions.

Leopold and fellow All-American John Pohl were given the Elwin "Doc" Romnes Leadership and Sportsmanship Award. Pohl was also the recipient of the Mike Crupi Most Determined Player Award for the third straight season.

Senior goaltender Adam Hauser was given the Dr. V. George Nagobads Unsung Hero Award. Sophomore Grant Potulny earned the Tom Mohr Playoff MVP Award after collecting four goals in three NCAA Tournament games, including the game-winner in overtime against Maine in the title game. Freshman Keith Ballard was the recipient of the Frank Pond Rookie of the Year Award, and senior Erik Wendell was given the John Mayasich Outstanding Student-Athlete Award. Freshman Judd Stevens received the Donald Clark Community Service Award.

Next up for Head Coach Don Lucia and the Golden Gophers is a trip to the White House to meet President Bush on Tuesday.
