5/29/2002 12:00:00 AM | Athletics

nomThe Big Ten Conference recognized a total of 794 spring and at-large student-athletes who have been named to the Academic All-Conference Team. To be eligible for an Academic All-Big Ten selection, nominees must be a letterwinner in at least their second academic year at the institution and carry a career grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better.

The University of Minnesota had 82 student-athletes honored, fourth highest in the conference. Ohio State led the way with 120 student- athletes. The Big Ten Academic All-Conference award winners also achieved excellence "on the field." On the tennis courts, Minnesota's Harsh Mankad (JR, Economics) was named the Big Ten Player and Sportsman of the Year and was the nation's top-ranked singles player earlier this year. In baseball, Minnesota hurler C.J. Woodrow (JR, Finance) was selected as the Big Ten Pitcher of the Year after guiding the Gophers to their second Conference crown in the past three seasons.

Overall, the Big Ten Conference recognized 1,696 Academic All-Big Ten honorees during the 2001-02 academic year. Over the past six years, that number trails only last year's total of 1,745 selections.
