Gopher Women Complete First Day at NCAA Championships

All-The University of Minnesota women's track and field team completed the first day of competition on Wednesday, May 29 at the 2002 Outdoor Track and Field NCAA Championships in Baton Rouge, La.

All-American Tahesia Harrigan placed 18th in the 200-meter dash, finishing the sprint in just 23.68 seconds. The Big Ten Freshman of the Year was ranked 20th going into the event. Harrigan will compete in the 100-meter dash preliminaries on Thursday, May 30.

Competing in the heptathlon, Big Ten champion Barbora Spotakova competed in the four of seven events in the two day competition. In the first event of the series, the high jump, Spotakova failed to clear a height, virtually eliminating herself from the competition. She did not compete in shot put or 200-meter dash, and finished 19th in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.23 seconds. Spotakova will compete tomorrow in the javelin, in which she is ranked fifth in the nation coming into the event.

The NCAA Championships continue through Saturday, June 1 at Louisiana State University.
