Roche and Streff rowed in every Varsity Eight race for the Golden Gophers in both the fall and spring seasons in 2001-02. As members of the first Varsity Eight, Roche and Streff aided the Gophers to wins against nationally ranked Iowa and Wisconsin at Big Ten Racing. With the wins, the Gophers earned the Big Ten Boat of the Week. It was the first time the University of Minnesota rowing team received a weekly conference award in only its second year as a varsity sport. The Gophers went on to place fifth at the Big Ten Championships, where Roche and Streff were named to the All-Big Ten first and second team. The team improved its' sixth-place finish from the prior season.
The nomination criteria included: meeting eligibility rules as defined by the institution, participating in at least 75 percent of the season's races in a varsity boat, and the student-athlete's coach must be in good standing with the CRCA. The teams are selected by head coaches based on the team record in dual action, strength of schedule, nomination rank, coaches' comments and 2,000-meter ergometer score.
