Golden Gophers Finish Seventh in Final Sears Cup Standings

Stanford captured the Sears Directors' Cup for the eighth consecutive year. The Cardinal scored points in the maximum 20 sports, 10 men's sports and 10 women's sports, to tally 1,499 points. Texas was a distant runner-up with 1,110.5 points, while Florida (1,078), North Carolina (1065.5) and UCLA (1,026) rounded out the top five. Michigan edged Minnesota for Big Ten Conference honors, as the Wolverines accumulated 917 points to 886.5 for the Gophers.
The Gophers used national titles in the sports of men's hockey, men's golf and wrestling to pace the way to their highest Sears Cup ranking. Minnesota earned points in 18 sports: men's and women's cross country, volleyball, women's basketball, men's and women's gymnastics, men's and women's hockey, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's indoor track & field, wrestling, men's golf, softball, men's tennis and men's and women's outdoor track & field.
