todUniversity of Minnesota men's golfers Justin Smith and Matt Anderson were named PING All-Americans today by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Smith, a sophomore from Moon Township, Pa., was named to the third team and Anderson, a junior from Edina, Minn., was accorded honorable mention honors. It is the first such honor for either player.

Smith and Anderson led the Golden Gophers to the national title last weekend in Columbus, Ohio. Smith finished in a tie for fourth place at the National Championships at 5-under par 279. Smith, the only player in the NCAA field who didn't have a round over par, was also the co- medalist at the NCAA West Regional in Albuquerque, N.M. Anderson, a walk-on to the team last season, shot a career and tournament-best 66 in the final round of NCAAs and finished in a tie for eighth place at 3-under par 281.

The National Champion Golden Gophers will return four All-Americans for next season. Wilhelm Schauman, a junior in 2001-02, earned third team honors last season and Simon Nash, a sophomore this season, was an honorable mention selection in 2000-01.
