GoldeSenior right fielder Jason Kennedy was chosen by the Detroit Tigers in the 20th round of Major League Baseball's Amateur Draft, becoming the 14th Golden Gopher to be selected in the past five years. It is the 14th straight season Minnesota has had at least one player chosen in the draft, and Kennedy is the third straight player to go to Detroit. Last season, Jack Hannahan and Mike Kobow were both chosen by the Tigers.

One of the most physically gifted athletes on the 2002 Minnesota roster, Kennedy started all but six games in right field over his four seasons. He ranks among the top 10 in school history in 26 different career statistical categories, and is the all-time leader in four of those categories, including games played and hits by a pitch. A three-time Scholar Athlete and Academic All-Big Ten award winner, Kennedy was named the 2002 Hormel Foods Baseball Classic Most Valuable Player and a member of the all-tournament team, after leading the field with a .636 batting average, including a 4-for-4 performance in the win over Alabama, currently the third-ranked team in the country. He was named All-Big Ten and Academic All-District in his final season, and leaves as the Big Ten Tournament record holder with three home runs and seven RBI in a tournament game versus Ohio State in 1999.
