Minnesota Soccer Downs MSU, Mankato, 4-1, in Exhibition Match

midfieldThe University of Minnesota women's soccer team opened its 2002 campaign with a solid 4-1 triumph over Division II Minnesota State, Mankato in an exhibition match in Mankato, Minn.

Junior midfielder Amanda McMahon, a transfer from Marshall University, scored two goals for the Golden Gophers. Forward Rachael Roth, Minnesota's scoring leader from the 2001 season, started where she left off, notching a goal for the Golden Gophers. Freshman Kaitlin Neary, a native of Tacoma, Wash., tallied her first goal for the Maroon and Gold. Full game statistics were unavailable at the time of this release.

In goal for the Golden Gophers, highly-touted freshman Karli Kopeitz, a local standout from Champlin, Minn., played 60 minutes, while sophomore Kelly Kraft played the remainder of the game in net.

Minnesota opens its 2002 regular season schedule with two games in Missoula, Mont., next weekend. The Golden Gophers take on Washington State on Friday, Aug. 30, before battling host Montana on Sunday, Sept. 1.
