Golden Gopher Soccer Blanks Iowa State, 1-0, in Ames

The University of Minnesota soccer team edged Iowa State 1-0 today in Ames, Iowa behind junior forward Rachael Roth’s second-half goal. The lone marker of the match was Roth’s second game-winning goal of the season. Freshman goalkeeper Karli Kopietz moved the Minnesota record to 4-1 with her third shutout of the year. Kopietz officially only faced one shot on goal in the match.
The Golden Gophers took the lead in the 53rd minute on Roth’s team- leading fourth goal of the season. Senior defender Meghan Jones played a ball long and high down the right half of the pitch towards Roth. Iowa State’s defender misplayed the ball, letting it sail over her head, allowing Roth to gain possession inside the penalty area. Roth, one-on-one with ISU goalkeeper Beth Chapman, deftly touched the ball into the low right corner of the net. With the goal, Roth pushed her point-scoring streak to four consecutive matches. Jones was credited with the lone assist for her first point of the season.
The two teams went scoreless in the opening half with the Golden Gophers out-shooting ISU 5-2. Roth had the best chance to put points on the board late in the half. Roth received a pass deep in the Cyclone penalty area and fired at Chapman who made a diving save to her left. The Golden Gophers employed their trademark high-pressure attack, evidenced by Minnesota’s 5-1 advantage in corner kicks in the first stanza.
For the game, Minnesota finished with the advantage in shots (14-7), shots on goal (7-1), corner kicks (8-2) and fouls (12-10).
The Golden Gophers head home to battle Cincinnati, ranked eighth in the region, on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 1 p.m., at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. The match against the Bearcats is Minnesota’s final nonconference contest before the Big Ten season.
