Men's Golf Fifth After Opening Round of Topy Cup

nationalThe University of Minnesota men's golf team is in fifth place after the opening round Tuesday of the Topy Cup being held at the par 72 Tanagura Country Club in Fukushima, Japan. The defending national champs opened up their 2002-03 season with an even-par 288 and are 16 strokes behind first-place Clemson. The Topy Cup is an 11 team tournament, with four teams from the United States and seven Japanese teams, hosted by the Japanese Student Golf Association.

Junior David Morgan carded the low round on the day for Minnesota with a 2-under-par 70, and is tied for eighth place. Senior Wilhelm Schauman and junior Simon Nash both shot an even-par 72 to sit tied for 19th place. Junior Justin Smith is tied for 29th after shooting a 74 (+2), and senior Matt Anderson is tied for 35th after firing a 3-over-par 75.

The Topy Cup continues through Thursday.
