Gopher Women's Hockey Ranked Second in USCHO Poll

CoThe University of Minnesota women's hockey team starts the season ranked second in the US College Hockey Online preseason poll. The Golden Gophers received one vote for the top honor, while Western Collegiate Hockey Association opponent, Minnesota-Duluth garnered the No. 1 spot. The WCHA has four schools mentioned in the preseason poll; Minnesota-Duluth (1), Minnesota (2), Wisconsin ranked sixth and Ohio State receiving votes.

The Golden Gophers finished the 2001-02 season on top of the WCHA, winning both the league regular-season championship and the tournament championship. With the Gophers boasting a 28-4-6 record, Minnesota earned its first trip to the NCAA Frozen Four held in Durham, N.H.

The Gophers have an exhibition game against the Toronto Junior Aeros Friday, Oct. 4, at Mariucci Arena. Game time is set for a 7:05 p.m. start. The Gophers open the regular season against at Findlay (Ohio), Oct. 12-13. Minnesota returns 13 letterwinners from last year's squad, including All-American Ronda Curtin and First-Team All-WCHA goalie Jody Horak. The Gophers also welcome a talented freshmen class of Ashley Albrecht, Chelsey Brodt, Natalie Darwitz, Krista Johnson, Allie Sanchez and Krissy Wendell.
