Wrestling Downs Arizona State, Advances in National Duals Consolation Bracket

Minnesota (9-3) won six matches versus the Sun Devils, including five of the first six. Bobbe Lowe got Gold Country going at 125 pounds with a 25-9 technical fall over Aaron Suzuki. Lowe tallied 10 takedowns and accumulated 2:19 of advantage time for the win. Top- ranked Ryan Lewis pushed the score to 8-0 with a 7-2 win over No. 10 Mike Simpson. The Sun Devil tied the bout at two early in the second period, but Lewis scored five unanswered points to move to 15-2 on the season. ASU picked up its first win of the dual at 141 pounds as No. 4 Dana Holland defeated Tommy Owen, 15-8. Owen held tough in the end, not allowing ASU to gain the major decision.
Minnesota won three straight from 149 to 165 pounds to put the meet in the bag, beginning with No. 2 Jared Lawrence’s 18-3 technical fall over Chris Smith. Smith was filling in for top-ranked Eric Larkin. Lawrence nothed six takedowns and nearly four minutes of advantage time to stay perfect on the day. Top-ranked Luke Becker continued his unbeaten streak at the National Duals with a 17-5 major decision over Patrick Williams at 157 pounds. Third-ranked Jacob Volkmann tallied his second pin of the season with his 1:54 fall over Mike Smith.
The Sun Devils won three of the final four bouts, starting with No. 5 Curtis Owen’s 5-1 win over No. 8 Josh McLay at 174 pounds. McLay led 1-0 after the second period, but Owen owned the final stanza. At 184 pounds, Ron Renzi made the team score 23-9 with his 4-0 blanking of Casey Flaherty. The Golden Gophers picked up their final win of the night with No. 10 Damion Hahn’s 9-6 triumph over Scott Hollingsworth at 197 pounds. Arizona State picked up the final points of the night at heavyweight as No. 4 Kellan Fluckiger downed No. 10 Garrett Lowney, 3-0.
Arch-rivals Minnesota and Iowa face off tomorrow at 9 a.m. Eastern time in St. John Arena on the campus of Ohio State University.
