Wrestling Defeats Michigan State, 22-14, in Big Ten Opener

The Spartans (3-5) got off to a 3-0 lead after 125 pounds as No. 12 Nick Simmons outlasted No. 16 Bo bbe Lowe, 11-4. Simmons took a 5-4 lead after two periods and Lowe threatened to make it close, but the MSU grappler scored six points in the final 15 seconds to take the win. The Golden Gophers rebounded at 133 pounds as top-ranked Rya n Lewis posted a 12-1 major decision on Shane Martin. Lewis tallied four takedowns and racked up 3:41 advantage time to move to 18-2 overall on the season. At 141 pounds, 17th-ranked Derek Phillips won his Minnesota debut with a 6-3 triumph over Eric Keith. Phillips led 3-2 after two periods and added points via an escape, takedown and advantage time to post his first since the Midlands Championships in December.
No. 12 Karl Nadolsky won his 149-pound bout over To mmy Owen, 14-4, to tie the meet at seven. Owen was filling in for second-ranked Jar ed Lawrence. Minnesota recaptured the lead after the 157-pound match as top-ranked Luk e Becker defeated No. 6 Gray Maynard, 7-3. Becker tallied five points in the second stanza to improve to 15-1 overall and 10-1 in duals. The Golden Gophers took a 16-7 lead as fourth- ranked Jac ob Volkmann won by disqualification over Arsen Aleksanyan.Volkmann took the win as the Spartan was called for stalling five times in the bout. MSU pulled within six as Rashad Evans downed No. 14 Jo sh McLay, 4-3, at 174 pounds. The difference in the bout was an Evans takedown midway through the third period. McLay fell to 11-10 overall on the season.
Ma tt Nagel gave the U three more team points at 184 pounds with his 5- 1 win over Jeff Clemens. It was Nagel's first win of the season at 184 pounds. Nagel registered a takedown in the first and second period, and added a point with 2:44 of advantage time to move to 15- 10 overall and 5-5 in duals. At 197 pounds, Ja cob Lininger filling in at 197 pounds for No. 12 Dam ion Hahn, fell to No. 7 Nik Fekete, 15-7. 13th ranked heavyweight Gar rett Lowney wrapped up the win for the Golden Gophers, dropping John Wechter, 6-4.
The Golden Gophers continue the Big Ten season next Friday, Jan. 31, at Penn State at 7 p.m. in State College, Pa.
