Illinois was 10-12 in the half from the free throw line, while Minnesota made only three visits to the charity stripe in the half.
The Gophers' ball-handling woes continued early in the second half as four Gopher miscues aided Illinois' run. Angelina Williams capitalized two Gopher turnovers with layups as she scored six points during the stretch.
Minnesota trailed by as many as 23 points several times in the second half, managed to chip the lead to nine points on a Von Wald three-pointer with 2:12 to play. Williams responded with a big bucket for Illinois and with Minnesota forced to foul responded by going a perfect 12-for-12 in the last two minutes of the game.
The Gophers were balanced offensively with five players hitting double figures, led by Von Wald with 15. Whalen chipped in 13 points and eight assists. Freshman Shannon Bolden scored a career-high 11 points. Andersson and Kim Prince added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Yanni finished with a career-high 30 points to top Illinois. Williams scored 22 points.
The Golden Gophers have a bye on Thursday and play host to Northwestern on Sunday, Feb. 2, in their next action.
