Minnesota Opens Season with Ohio State
The No. 1 Golden Gophers open the regular season with a Western Collegiate Hockey Association series against Ohio State, Oct. 17-18, in Ridder Arena. Both games are slated for a 7:05 p.m., start.
Both games will be broadcast on gophersports.com. Tom Witschen will provide the play-by-play. Live statistics will also be available by clicking on the Gameday section on gophersports.com.
The All-Time Series
The Golden Gophers hold a 15-3-0 advantage over the Buckeyes in the all-time series. The last time the Gophers lost to OSU was March 9, 2001, in a 4-0 loss at the WCHA Tournament in Rochester, Minn. Since then, Minnesota has won the last nine games, five of which were one-goal contests.
The Last Time With the Buckeyes
Krissy Wendell scored five points in a series sweep over Ohio State last February. The Maroon and Gold won 5-3 in the first game of the series and 2-1 for the sweep. Of her five points, Wendell scored two power play goals, a short-handed goal and a game-winning goal. Wendell scored the game-winning, power-play marker at 18:35 of the third for the 2-1 win. However, with less than 30 seconds left in the game, Wendell and an Ohio State player collided at center ice, fracturing Wendell's collarbone, which kept her sidelined for the remainder of the regular season.
In Exhibition Play
Kelly Stephens led the Maroon and Gold with five goals and one assist in three games during exhibition play. Stephens scored a hat trick in the 4-3 win over the Oval X-Treme, her first time as a Golden Gopher. Natalie Darwitz had five points, tallying a goal and four assists. Kelsey Bills, Becky Wacker and Krissy Wendell each scored four points in three games played.
