Men's Golf Leads After First Round of Landfall Tradition

The 12th-ranked University of Minnesota men's golf team is in first place after the first round of the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C. The Golden Gophers shot a first round 4-under 284 to lead by two shots over Ohio State and 11 over Penn State. The tournament is being played at the part 72, 6,973-yard Nicklaus Course at the Country Club of Landfall.

Minnesota has all five players in the top 15 of the individual standings. Senior preseason second team All-American Justin Smith (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) is tied for second after a first round 69. Sophomore Ryan Paulson (Minneapolis, Minn./Holy Angels) is one shot behind Smith after a 70 and stands tied for fourth. Freshman Bronson LaCassie (Camira, Queensland/Kelvin Grove) fired a 1-under 71 and is tied for seventh. Freshman John Hempstock (Colvend, Scotland/Dumfries Academy) and junior Ben Greve (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) each carded a 74 and are tied for 15th.

The second round is Saturday and the final round will be played Sunday.
