Gopher Rowing Starts Season Hosting the Head of the Mississippi

tThe Golden Gopher women's rowing team opened the 2003-04 season hosting the Head of the Mississippi today on the campus of the University of Minnesota. The Gophers competed in three events, sweeping the competition in the Women's Open 8+, Women's Open 4+ and the Women's Novice 8+ races. There were over 100 shells competing in the regatta.

Minnesota's First Varsity Eight won the Open 8+ race with a time of :13:05. The Gophers' winning shell consisted of coxswain Katherine Nelson, Jackie Gagner at stroke, Beth Ratterman, Heidi Rose, Jill Peters in the No. 5 seat, Erika Barkute, Andrea Pierce, Katie Biese in the No. 2 seat and Beth Hornby at bow.

Minnesota's Second Varsity Eight finished with a race time of :13:21, placing third. Minneapolis Rowing Club placed finished seven seconds ahead of the Gophers for second place. Minnesota's third-place team had Leah Gross as coxswain, Rachel Hotkowski at bow, Lida Storch, Sam Wangsgard, Meghan Johnson, Sarah Reed in the No. 5 seat, Catilin Dowden, Liz Ponder and Jenna Buskohl at stroke.

Minnesota also took control in the Women's Open 4+ event when the Gophers placed three in the top four spots. Minnesota C finished five seconds ahead of St. Thomas A boat, which finished second overall. The Gophers' winning shell of Kristi Branigan at coxswain, Tracey Tallman at stroke, Shelby Williams, Lora Sweezy and Jackie Oeth at bow. Minnesota A came in third with a race time of 15:02, just two seconds off the second-place finishers. The shell contained Erica Gordon as the coxswain, Mariel Gartner at stroke, Jillian Casey, Katie Engel and Cheryl Wick. Minnesota B team of Annie Alwin, Kari Larson, Anja Kroll, Ashford Kroll and Amie Shindelar was fourth with a race time of 15:27.

Minnesota A took home the Novice Eight action with a race time of 0:14:48, followed by Minnesota B in second place in 0:16:19. Minnesota C finished seventh overall in a time of 0:17:37.

The Gophers will travel to Rockford, Ill. to compete in the Head of the Rock, Oct. 12.
