Men's Swimming Tops Northwestern 203-95

GolThe No. 8 University of Minnesota men's swimming and diving team defeated the Northwestern Wildcats, 203-95 today at the University Aquatic Center. Minnesota won 11 of 16 events contested.

The Golden Gophers started the meet with a 200-yard medley relay win. Adam Mitchell, Sean Kelly, Lucas Peterson and Terry Silkaitis won the event in 1:30.56 to give Minnesota 11 points after one event.

Mitchell went on to win the 100 and 200 back events with a time of 48.81 and 1:47.37, respectively. His 48.81 time in the 100 back provisionally qualified him for the NCAA Championships. In Minnesota's first two meets of the season, Mitchell has won four events and provisionally qualified for both the 100 and 200 backstrokes.

Silkaitis captured two individual events as well in the 50 and 100 free events, finishing with times of 20.40 and 44.56. Silkaitis improved his season-best in the 100, provisionally qualifying for nationals. It was his first competition of the season in the 50 free.

In the 50 free, Minnesota took the top three spots earning 16 points. Silkaitis was first, followed by Ales Volcansek (21.17) and Igor Cerensek (21.20).

Travis Beckerle won the 1000 free in 9:22.09 and the 500 free in 4:34.41. Sean McCaffrey earned the top spot in the 200 free finishing in 1:39.26, just missing the provisional time of 1:39.07.

The swimmers ended the meet with a first-place finish in the 400 free relay. The team of Silkaitis, McCaffrey, Neil Osten and Cerensek finished in 3:02.37, while Minnesota B team of Daniel Berve, Kiel Ochalek, Brian Gettelfinger and Volcansek came in second in 3:07.65.

Ben Herdt led the divers taking both the 1 and 3-meter diving competitions. Earning 18 points total, Herdt won the 1-meter with a score of 294.45, followed by a 319.05 score in the 3-meter event.

The Golden Gophers will host North Carolina and North Dakota, Nov. 7-8 at the University Aquatic Center. Friday's action will start at 6 p.m., while Saturday's is scheduled for a noon start.
