Women's Hockey Takes First Game Against Brown, 5-2

The Gophers came out in full force scoring four times in the first period. Andrea Nichols started the scoring charge with her first collegiate goal at 4:19 of the first period when the puck squeezed through the five-hole of Brown goalie Katie Germain. Brown tied the game at 8:39 of the first, but Minnesota scored :14 later. Wendell started the play passing it to Nichols, who took the inital shot. Becky Wacker was waiting on the doorstep to knock in the rebound at 8:53.
The Gophers then put the game up to a two-goal advantage at 10:21. Noelle Sutton scored her third goal of the year with La Toya Clarke assisting on the play. Minnesota ended its four-goal surge with a power-play tally at 14:17. Clarke scored her second power-play goal of the season with Natalie Darwitz and Kelly Stephens on the assists. The Maroon and Gold outshot the Bears 16-4 in the first stanza.
Minnesota scored its second power-play mark of the game at 7:38 of the second period. Wendell added her fourth power-play tally in seven games played, while Darwitz and Clarke added assists.
That would be all that the Gophers would need. Minnesota allowed at goal at 9:15 of the third period, but the Maroon and Gold held the three-goal advantage. The Gophers stopped six Brown power-play opportunities in the third stanza. Minnesota ended with a 2-4 power- play conversion, while the Bears were 0-6.
Jody Horak 18 shots on goal for the win. Horak had four saves in the first, four in the second and nine in the third. She now stands at 6- 0-0 on the season.
Minnesota will look for the sweep tomorrow at 11 a.m. (CST)at Meehan Auditorium.
